The five most stylish celebrity couples

Matching up your wardrobes as a couple is a tricky task, particularly if neither of you are famous millionaires with a room in your house solely dedicated to storing designer clobber.

There are ways of doing it on the cheap - for instance, try both wearing odd socks, or cutting a hat in half with a pair of scissors and using one bit each. (Admittedly, I'm not a fashion guru, but this sounds ahead of its time).

In England it can be easier for men and women to coordinate their clothes, as for most of the year both halves will be wearing a raincoat, sensible shoes and an expression of grim determination to move abroad next year.

For celebrities, looking stylish together on the red carpet is all-important, so here are five stars who make sure they look good together before getting out of the taxi.

The doyenne couple of well-dress celebrity pairings, these two have been complementing (and complimenting) each others outfits since they started dating way back when.

Despite Victoria's adamant refusal to smile when being photographed, there's no doubt that they always look good together, which is fair enough given that she's a fashion designer and he's a model (who occasionally plays football).

Whatever his policies on healthcare, drone warfare, torture, foreign affairs and so on, there's no denying that Barack is the best-dressed president since the last democratic incumbent.

This is added to be Michelle's willingness to mix and match high-end outfits with normal brands such as J.Crew, making her a more down-to-earth but still stylish First Lady.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi

The talk-show host and actress have been together for years now, marrying in 2008. This has given them plenty of time to co-ordinate their wardrobe and they tend to make a stylish pair.

DeGeneres is known for rocking a Justin Bieber-ish hair-cut, white sneakers and menswear, which is perfectly offest by De Rossi's tendency to opt for a more traditionally feminine approach.

(In other news, De Rossi helps fund a cat charity called Ally Cat Allies, which is adorable).

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes

In keeping with his status as one of the few former child stars and Hollywood actors who appears to have grown up unscathed and remained fairly sane, Gosling tends to opt for a dressed-down approach when not on the red carpet (although with those looks, he's never going to be all that casual).

Mendes is also willing to dress like a normal person - when you've been one of the biggest models in the world, it's probably quite relaxing to just throw something on when you're taking a walk down the shops.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian

The polar opposite of the last couple mentioned in many ways, these two are known for flaunting their designer gear and stepping out with matching minimalist looks.

There has been speculation that West is behind Kardashian's change in style, but what kind of egotistical control freak would feel the need to tell his girlfriend what to wear? Well, actually, let's leave that there.
