In my jobs as a professional electronics and communications engineer I normally work full time on contract, though between contracts at the moment. The mental challenge has been to use this spare time productively and keep my mind active. Not interested in giving up work for at least a few more years.
I've dabbled a bit at very basic level in French and Spanish, and Italian to a lesser extent, and quite enjoy giving it a go when abroad or sometimes in local restaurants. Trying to revise French and Spanish using DuoLingo at the moment - a hobby of sorts.
Part of my current spare time is also taken up with attempting to write a technologically accurate 'hard' SciFi novel, which I've always wanted to try. Going OK but haven't got the 'love interest' quite right yet (in the novel or real life), or the final plot twist. The proverbial Writer's Block!
I have travelled quite a bit for work and pleasure through Europe, most of the States other than Hawaii sadly or Alaska, plus Ottawa and Montreal in Canada. For holidays I've also travelled a bit in North Africa and to the Sunshine Coast Queensland in Australia where my daughter emigrated, and the South Pacific (from Sydney to Fiji and back on a cruise). I lived in Gibraltar for 3 years as a teenager which was very nice and handy for family trips to Spain and North Africa. I like meeting people from different backgrounds to mine and different cultures.
Most recently I worked for 3 years fully remotely from home in Clevedon in North Somerset, which suited me and the London-based client. Got a lot more work done, and it made me realise how important it is to have a better work-life balance.
I often go to see bands in pubs or sometimes in a theatre which are usually old school pop, blues or rock, though I'm also into classical music particularly J S Bach, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rodrigo and Mozart. I once had a very Italian experience going to the Verdi opera Rigoletto in the open-air Roman amphitheatre Arena Di Verona on a memorable starry night, as part of a Lake Garda holiday.
I like most music except rap/hip-hop/house and related genres that sometimes rely on heavy bass, drum machines and often crude lyrics.
Favourite movies are The Quiet Man, Leap Year, Star Wars (first three), The Student Prince, Apollo 13, and Tiitanic (James Cameron). Comedies, musicals, SciFi and love stories definitely float my boat.
My favourite book is the masterpiece Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and I particularly like the BBC series onscreen version.
I'm a keen Karaoke singer who is quite fearless, and I used to play a bit of rhythm then bass guitar for fun. When singing I tend to do power crooner music like Matt Monro, Sinatra or Dino, soft rock, some country, and of course Elvis love songs.
Particular Karaoke favourites I do are New York New York (Frank Sinatra), That's Amore (Dean Martin), Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis), and I Love You Because (Jim Reeves).
My preference is to meet a non-smoker, though I like to think I am fairly tolerant generally.
I really enjoy female company, though all of the ladies I know are firmly in the Friends Zone and unfortunately in relationships, so just nice to chat!
Some eyesight issues now make foreign travel less easy though still possible, but I just get on with life generally and with work.
I decided a couple of years ago to give up driving due to vision issues and to ensure the safety of others, which perhaps has an impact on distance I can travel for dates routinely.
My hope is to find a nice fun lady who is caring and kind, interesting, and easy to get on with.
I will eventually get round to putting some recent photos on the site, as my last available one attached is about 6 - 7 years old I think and I've lost some hair on top and gone a bit greyer since then :).
In my view assessing dating interest based on just looks is rather shallow anyway, though quite common it seems, judging by strident statements about lack of photos in many profiles.
Ladies who write a more descriptive profile rather than answering stock questions generally appeal to me more. It is surely about getting a sense of what makes someone tick.
Looks are not as important to me in a lady as a grown up attitude to all aspects of a relationship, and above all honesty. I like straightforward women.
