Interview with Oakwood45 |

What do you like most about where you currently live? It's quiet and very leafy. I live right on the edge of London - the city on one side, the sprawling Hertfordshire countryside on the other...the best of both worlds. |
| |
|
What are your favourite leisure activities? Wandering around with my hands in my pockets, deep in thought. No, come to think of it, that's more an addiction. Walking, scrambling (up mountains), exploring the countryside, visiting old churches and castles, investigating local history. I used to practise kendo (Japanese fencing) twice a week but I'm getting a bit old for that now. I find bellringing keeps me in shape though. |
| |
|
Where in the world are your favourite places? Right here, in the UK: Exmoor, the North Devon coast, Snowdonia, the Lake District...anywhere with a view. |
| |
|
What would you do on an ideal date? Talk. I'm sorry but I've never really been into dining out or going to pubs and clubs. I don't drink, I don't dance, I don't hold with the idea that CGIs are the best thing that's ever happened to the movie industry, and I have a lifelong phobia of restaurants. A good meal, to me, is something that takes two minutes to arrive at your table and five minutes to eat. A quick cup of tea and I can be on my way. I'm sorry, but that's just the way I am. I much prefer to do my own cooking. |
| |
|
What are you looking for in a partner? Honesty, love and respect. |
| |
|
What makes a good relationship? Honesty, love and respect. |

What makes you laugh? Little things. At school I was always the class clown, even though much of it was unintentional. I was certainly never any good at telling jokes, but if anyone ever got his finger stuck in a tap, or got locked in the loo, or slipped on a banana skin while carrying his lunch tray, it was always me. Years later, when I became a teacher myself, I found it was my pupils who made me laugh. I think that's one of the reasons I've enjoyed being a teacher so much. I have to admit I've never really been a fan of stand-up comedy; I prefer sitcoms - I tend to find situations funnier than gags. But these days the conversations I have with my daughter probably make me laugh the most. Sitting in the corner of a room, giggling like a couple of ten-year-olds over the sudden reminiscence of something very trivial that may have happened years ago...yes, that just about sums us up. I don't really go for alternative comedy or post-alternative comedy. I guess I'm happiest when I'm chuckling away at all those endless repeats of Dad's Army or The Good Life or Yes, Minister. So, a word of warning: if you're the kind of person who's into Frankie Boyle or Jimmy Carr...well, let's just say I don't think we'd really get on. |
| |
|
What music do you like? All sorts...except, perhaps, jazz; I never really could see the point of jazz. Years ago I used to be a drummer in a band (sounds pretty cool until I tell you we're talking about a youth marching band back in the 1970s). Actually I was quite a mean bugler in my youth too, and at school I learned to play the guitar. I even sang in the school choir for a while, but only because I couldn't bear to be left out of anything. Today I'm a bellringer at my local church. |
| |
|
What has been the highlight of your life so far? Highlights, lowlights...one invariably comes at a cost, the other rarely seems quite so bad looking back. I don't know; the two are so often inter-related that it's sometimes quite difficult to distinguish between them. In the end they're just different sides of the same coin. I used to suffer quite badly from manic-depression ('bipolar disorder' as we have to call it now), so there have been a great many highs and lows in my life. But I've been okay for a few years now. I'm stable and responsible...almost to the point of being boring. Again, if you're looking for fun and excitement, I think you'd best move on. I've had more than enough excitement in my life already. I'm more a 'pipe and slippers' man now...well, a 'roll-ups and slippers' man anyway. |
| |
|
What are you looking forward to in the future? My daughter's graduation. She's had to overcome a lot of obstacles to get there, so it'll be quite a day when it comes. |
